When Westwind Air Bearings Ltd began marketing air lubricated spindles capable of speeds in excess of 100,000 rpm in 1963, it was not long before the company started receiving requests from both public and private research centres to produce high speed rotating devices to meet diverse special needs. These ranged from tiny, finger-tip size, infrared choppers running on helium gas in skin cancer detectors to much larger machines capable of testing centrifugally-arming artillery shell fuses at speeds up to 30,000 rpm. One of the most challenging, as well as long-lived projects, however, was undertaken under contract to Britain’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL). This involved developing machines to rotate glass prisms at the highest possible speeds for use in laser research.

GIS which stands for Geographical Information Systems is the combination of several technological fields that provides various ways to analyze data and display the results on a map in the form of points, lines and polygons. Information can be collected from one source, and then combined with the data from a second map layer.

Many Americans have been exploring renewable energy options for their homes in recent years. Some are motivated by environmental factors, seeking renewable energy sources due to issues like climate change, pollution, or resource scarcity. Others are motivated by purely financial factors, recognizing that, though the initial investment for green home energy sources may be high, the ability to produce one’s own electricity or hot water is financially worthwhile in the long term, and that money will can be saved over the course of a few years.

Research in this particular field has been going on now for a number of years, with scientists trying to determine if adult stem cells have the same potential and capabilities as embryonic stem cells. Studies are being conducted every day, consistently revealing new information. This brings us closer and closer to discovering cures for many different diseases, which was once thought to be an impossible feat.

As kids we watched great and not so great science fiction films. Many of them depict a space ship or a space station, or even a colony where people were able to breathe without helmets and could produce their own food. That may not be reserved for movie lovers for much longer, as NASA is working on producing food and oxygen in space for future astronauts.

It’s just a few days before Christmas. You have had to work long days and you are going to brave the malls for another two hours looking for a gift. Call it pragmatism or procrastination; you only have a few days to find the kids a gift and you’re drawing a blank.

Like all of us, I am aging, but it puzzled me when I received this book as a gift. It did not take long to realize that this would be a fascinating read considering my ongoing study of brain development. David Snowdon, PhD the author and researcher – calls himself “a medical detective, an epidemiologist looking for clues to the mysteries of aging.” His chosen population, nuns, provided an ideal environment for the study. He shares many precious stories of his encounter with nuns that I will not try to recount. I recommend the book as very interesting read.

Organic chemistry is a peculiar discipline within the subject of chemistry. It is the scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and synthesis of organic compounds which, by definition contain carbon. These compounds are molecules composed of carbon and hydrogen, and may include other elements as well. A lot of organic compounds contain nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, and more rarely phosphorus or sulfur. These structurally diverse compounds are important constituents of, many products including plastics, drugs, petrochemicals, food, explosives, and paints. They form the basis of almost all earthly life processes (with very few exceptions).

The National Science Foundation, otherwise known as NSF, is a United States Government agency that is predominantly answerable for pursuing and ensuring fundamental scientific studies and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering. The programs and activities of the NSF are administered in an attempt to enable them to realize their mission, which is “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense.” In keeping with this mission, the National Science Foundation, in close collaboration the National Cancer Institute, has recently developed the Physical and…
