Following on from the Part 1, where I looked at Coaching, Training and Bike Fitness, here are some more of my top tips for getting through you first season of Ironman. BRICK SESSIONS – A brick is when you finish a bike ride and follow it by a run, immediately. The distance of the bike ride is not hugely important but you will find this most beneficial after your longer rides and the longest ride before the race.

Having come to the end of my 3rd season in Triathlon and first season in Ironman, I wanted to share with you what I’ve learnt over my first 3 races. I started the year racing in IM Lanzarote which proved to be tough. I finished in 13hr 50mins with my legs giving up on me with 10k to go.

Now that the winter is drawing in some of your training sessions are likely to get shorter as well. This is the time of year to ensure that you are focusing on the technique elements of your training. If you have reviewed your 2011 season and are planning improvements for 2012 some of this will come from improved fitness or working with a coach but you will see bigger gains by looking at your technique in each discipline.

The second stage of your triathlon race is the bike. Many triathletes find the bike stage of the triathlon the easiest part of the race. Most triathletes seem to be comfortable with the bike. And although the bike can be a technical sport we seem to be able to get from A to B without too much hassle.

The run is the final section of your triathlon race. Once you have reached the run leg in your triathlon you know that the end is in sight. There are 2 main focuses for your run training: Firstly, you need to improve your running distance; and secondly you need to learn how to run with tired legs, as you will have just completed the bike leg.
