Real estate IRA investing incorporates all types of real estate investments under the self directed IRA or 401K. Of course it is mandatory to undertake this investment through an IRA Custodian. An individual retirement arrangement or IRA is a retirement plan first introduced in 1974 that provides tax benefits for taxpayers in the United States. An IRA account can either be a trust fund set up for the retirement of the taxpayer or an annuity or endowment contract with a company that offers life insurance. It is different from the 401K in the sense that the 401K is employment-based. It can also either be held by itself or as a supplement to the 401K.

A self directed 401K plan and an Individual Retirement Arrangement or IRA require investment decisions by the owner providing flexibility; however IRA rules and regulations require numerous reports and disclosures for all these transactions making it cumbersome and tedious. A simpler way to manage these IRA assets is outsourcing it to an IRA Custodian. A trustee or IRA custodian is the holder of the asset in behalf of the IRA owner. However, the IRA custodian is not the same as an “administrator”, a person or a firm handling reports and documents but is not directly responsible for the safekeeping of the assets being administered. The qualified IRA custodian should not be the IRA owner’s fiduciary and family members, such as the spouse, ancestor, lineal descendant (e.g. children), and any spouse of a lineal descendant.
