You could describe retirement as a point in time when you are no longer working to support an aggressive lifestyle, or it can be described as a period when you can pick and choose what you want to do in life. Either way, once your retirement starts you’ll discover that you need a transitional period of 12 to 18 months before you really get into the swing of being retired.

I have to say, the statistics mentioned in the article shocked me. Why, you may ask? We all knew the boomer retirement wave was coming. I was one of the first to start quoting McKinsey’s famous study on the War for Talent from the early 90’s who let us know that 78 million of these boomers were leaving the workplace. McKinsey’s prognostication was that we were about to experience not only a worker shortage, but a drain on intellectual capital unlike anything employers had ever experienced before.

When you think of your retirement what do visualise? Travelling the world visiting exotic countries, spending time chilling out playing golf or merely having more quality time to spend with your family. The real prospects will be having to work longer (which will involve covering for less productive colleagues for even longer) and having less pension than would have originally been predicted. Is there an alternative?

It seems the media is finally taking note that a number of us in the last half of our lives (boy does that phrase make me feel old) enjoy life-long learning. The front page of our local paper highlighted a man close to 90 who is graduating with his PhD.

Many people ponder the idea of developing a retirement business to supplement their income. For some this sounds like the ideal solution, and for others, their thoughts are, “I’ve worked my whole life. It’s MY time now…
