For the last several years the business world has largely been in a mindset of loss. The rules have changed here, too. You might say that we’ve moved from a more forgiving “middle school experience” into a tougher “high school” environment. We’ve been plucked out of our safe spaces and thrust into unfamiliar territory in which we are no longer sure what’s expected. The stakes are higher, the consequences tougher. More is being asked. What do you need to be a change leader? Well, a couple of things are needed – first you need to have a vision, then you need to know what you want and what you want to achieve. You may not be fully aware of the “how” but you need to have a strong conviction of the “what”.

Trust is an attribute, a value and a character trait that is very much on every leader’s mind. Leaders want to be sure that they are getting value for money and therefore look at measures which can report the ROI. Sometimes, though, this focus on immediate or even medium term ROI misses the deeper meaning behind these kinds of efforts. When you are changing attitudes and behaviours, you are working at a deep level of change. You have to look at different performance metrics which don’t focus on quantitative results but can look at the deeper layers of change. Dr. Dean Spitzer is my performance guru and has written a useful guide on Transformational Performance Measurement

A few months ago I removed another obstacle from interfering in my Big Easy Life. Sitting in my den, the line of sight through the window opened up as a result of installing new energy efficient windows. The old windows had horizontal frames between the top and bottom panes, each pane had a bar across it. Now that these bars are gone, I see more of the outside. There is nothing blocking my sight line. I am not seeing anything new, really, simply appreciating the unobstructed view. The trees and houses in the neighborhood I look at outside the window feel bigger. The room I am sitting in inside feels bigger. Everything feels bigger. Undefined space feels bigger.
