As the author says in the preface of the book, the focus of the book is on the intersection of post-9/11 national security dilemmas that face the United States and its allies, the development and application of the strategic doctrines and policies that respond to those circumstances, and presidential leadership and judgment that are brought to bear, for better or worse, on these issues, and as the title of the book implies it uses the analysis of two presidencies and the doctrine that both connects and separates them, as a method. After 9/11 when the American national icons were attacked, the Bush Administration put into place a large set of policies designed to prevent another, more deadly attack, policies which were controversial both domestically and abroad. Barack Obama ran for the disagreements which those policies were based on and was elected to the presidency.

If things continue down the path they have begun, and everybody involved keeps chest pounding and challenging each other to climb the ladder of aggression; sooner rather than later, severe weapons will begin to be fired and there will be a major conflict in the Middle East. This potential war will make the Iraq war look like a small border conflict in scale as it will be the culmination of over 50 years of aggressive behaviour between Iran, it’s Arab neighbours; and Israel and it’s pro-UN allies.

Russell has written his book in a simple and interesting style. He explains his ideas well. One feel after reading the book that war is really extremely harmful and destructive. Russell has not discussed defensive wars which may sometimes be proper. But when all countries agree not to fight, even defensive wars will not be necessary.

This week, President Obama urged congress to reach a compromise on the so-called debt ceiling-the legal ceiling for federal debt-and agree on a new budget that would balance America’s books. It seems the congressional “Gang of Six, “composed of the top lawmakers on either side of the isle, has finally agreed to move forward.Though it is unclear from what programs and jurisdictions this money will come, it is clear that reaching a final version any compromise and subsequent bill, in the bipartisan House and Senate, will be long and anguished.

Rather than write a gossipy, tell-all book about the inside workings of the Rudd Government, former Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner has opted to perform a piece of community service. Sideshow is a vigorously critical book of our circus like media, with the blame laid in equal measure on all segments of society – voters, politicians and media practitioners themselves.

In President Obama’s address on the Middle East, he called for Israel to withdraw to the 1967 borders. But in doing so, he sided with Hamas and, surprisingly, endangered the U.S.

Prominent Australian intellectual Robert Manne has published a stimulating volume of collected essays called Making Trouble. For anyone wanting to catch up on the last five years of Australian politics and culture, this is a perfect refresher course.

In this book by David Gergen from 2000, Gergen offers more access to the White House than a former President of the United States could. David Gergen served in a total of six capacities for four presidents. This makes David Gergen the consummate insider to the beltway and the inner workings of presidential administrations.
