When I’m not reading historical fiction, I enjoy a good mystery. “Hour Glass” was an excellent choice.

If you enjoy legal thrillers with a little fantasy and romance, Kate Wilhelm’s introduction of attorney Barbara Holloway is sure to capture your interest. The series takes place in Eugene, Oregon circa the 1990s.

This was a fun little book with a bit of a letdown at the end. There are some nice tense moments toward the climax but again a little abrupt to finish.

Aspiring writers are told this so often that it has become axiomatic-grab the reader with the first sentence. P.D. James does exactly that with the opening of this novel:

Apparently this was an interesting if not particularly difficult book for Ms. Penny to write. I am not sure if it was because of personal experience or just the subject matter but it is absolutely brilliant.

The Falls By Ian Rankin

I am not quite sure when this book was written but it was a while ago – I just hadn’t read it yet. This mystery has a certain eerie quality to it which I am not usually fond of but, because Rankin is a master of weaving stories, was very enjoyable.

This is a murder mystery set in World War II-era South Carolina. It is about a husband and wife who would have been better off never getting married to each other.

There are so many mystery and thriller books out there that it is difficult to pinpoint what to read. Here are five legal writers, who are not your typical courtroom drama types, along with good reasons to read them.

Currently the market for the genre of legal thrillers is abundantly populated and while many legal thrillers do turn out to be pretty decent reads – there are some that really are of a better class. Death on a High Floor, written by lawyer-turned-author Charles Rosenberg, happens to fall into the better class of legal thrillers. Available in paperback or e-book edition, this book is a very well written legal thriller that captures the reader’s attention immediately with its tightly devised plot.
